Senior Safe Program

Teaching fire safety to seniors

The Senior Fire Education (SAFE) program conducted by the Orleans Fire Department is conducted from several different aspects.

The primary delivery of the program is through group presentations delivered in conjunction with our Council on Aging services.

Group presentations are conducted on General Fire safety within the home, along with an emphasis on safe cooking for older adults, proper Smoke & CO detector placement, smoking dangers along with Home Escape planning and other safety issues that face our senior population.

In addition, presentations cover the importance of working smoke and CO detectors throughout the home, and how seniors with hearing loss may need additional hearing impaired smoke detectors installed.

Presentations cover our current File of Life program provided by the Orleans Fire Department, along with the importance of a medical alarm system for seniors who are home alone.

In-home fire safety visits

In home visits are conducted by our trained fire and life safety educator that will test and check home smoke and CO alarms if requested. These visits also cover general Fire Safety in the Home, Reducing Falls in the home and preparing seniors for inclement weather during storm emergencies.

Initial visits can be conducted during REACH visits with our council on aging staff.
